An Economic Migrant who put thousands into work in Britain returns to the UK

Images Video Audio
During the month of October, Anthony Wade MBE, who pioneered a multi million pound black hair industry in 20th century Britain, will be promoting his autobiography - The Adventures of an Economic Migrant, an outstanding personal account of his rags-to-riches story. In addition, he will also be speaking on issues facing the black community, the need to strengthen the black business base and his concerns relating to the subject of diversity in the workplace.
Anthony Wade, affectionately known as “Tony”, is one of three business partners who launched Dyke & Dryden Ltd and were credited with pioneering the black hair industry in the UK and later founded the annual Afro Hair & Beauty Exhibition, the shop window of the industry now in its 25th year. “The Adventures of an Economic Migrant” tells the struggle of building the business and his close involvement with the black community that led to leadership roles, which over the years, was to grow the author into a rounded business personality.

The narrative of this book embodies a rich mix of heart warming cultural stories of island life in Montserrat, from which he hailed, the discovery of his dual heritage and pursuits of boyhood dreams and ambitions that became a reality. Driven by a sincerity of purpose and the will to succeed against great odds. Men of lesser will and vision would have caved in under the sheer might of the problems Tony Wade experienced.

The author’s success kindled the spirit of ‘enterprise’, which has touched the lives of the entire black community in Britain and he will reflect on this issue during his upcoming presentations. He will seek to pass on his knowledge, wisdom and expertise gained from the several senior positions he held in the society.

Former Prime Minister, Mrs Margaret Thatcher, referred to Tony Wade as “someone who is doing the country proud”. He was honoured in 1987 with an MBE for his contribution to employment as well as a ‘Lifetime Achievement in Business Award 2005’ at the Guildhall London.
