Lutfun Hussain set up the Coriander Club in 2000 as a place where Bangladeshi women can grow vegetables, socialise and exercise whilst gardening. It aims to promote ethnic diversity, cultural exchange, inclusion, organic horticulture and healthy living in society. Throughout the winter months, when the gardening requires less maintenance, the club provides a weekly healthy cooking workshop, using organic herbs and vegetables. Lutfun’s work has been recognised with her appointment as a “London Leader” by the London Sustainable Development Commission. The London Leaders programme brings together 15 individuals from all walks of London life who will demonstrate what can be done when people work together to achieve positive change. At the launch each of the leaders signed a pledge committing themselves to a key sustainability campaign over the coming year. Lutfun Hussain’s commitment was to take the aspirations of the Coriander Club out to the community, and share its knowledge with local residents. The Coriander Club Cookbook by Lutfun Hussain is available from Spitalfields City Farm (main webpage: http://www.spitalfieldscityfarm.org/ or telephone 020 7247 8762) and will be free to volunteers, partners, and local groups working with the farm. The cost for people buying the book will be £4.99, and all proceeds will go back into the farm and the Coriander Club. |
