Arun Ghosh Cine-Concert: The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) ‘the Albany is reaching out to local as well as wider audiences with its bold experimental programme’ Time Out The Albany will be transformed into a sumptuous Bedouin style lounge for a screening of ‘The Adventures of Prince Achmed’ (1926) - the oldest surviving feature-length animation in cinema's history. Lotte Reiniger’s pioneering silhouette animation takes its inspiration from ‘1001 Arabian Nights,’ resulting in a hypnotic and visually breathtaking imagery. This stunning film will be accompanied by a new contemporary soundtrack especially created by clarinet virtuoso Arun Ghosh. The screening and live music plays homage to the era of silent movies accompanied by live orchestras. This new revitalised score will draw upon the cinematic orchestration styles of retro 70’s blaxploitation, classic westerns, Bollywood melodrama and the infamous Hammer horror films, with elements of hip hop, jazz and traditional Middle Eastern sounds. The venue will become a splendour of lanterns, rugs and drapes with audiences reclining on cushions and chaise longues and experiencing a cross art-form performance of cinema, music and physical theatre. Uniquely, the premiere performance of this music will be presented as a live action silhouette film featuring Arun Ghosh, the accompanying cast of musicians Adriano Adewale, Shabaka Hutchings, Jenny Adejayan, Corey Mwamba and Liran Donin and their instruments presented as shadows on screen. These musicians, renowned for their physicality in performance will create an additional display of movement to complement Lotte Reiniger’s cinematic style. "Ghosh displayed extraordinary charisma and musicianship and a consistently riveting compositional skill, born out of composing for theatre.” Jazzwise Arun Ghosh's theatre work includes Musical Director and Composer for Unicorn Theatre, composing for Oily Cart and Cardboard Citizens. Other theatre compositions include ‘Tell Tales’ at the Southbank, ‘The Tempest’ and ‘Antigone’ at Royal Exchange Manchester, ‘Storm’ at Contact Theatre and ‘Indian Ink’ at Salisbury Playhouse. His radio work includes ‘Bora Bistrah’ for Radio 3 and ‘The Healing Pool’ for Radio 4. Arun released his debut album ‘Northern Namaste’ on camoci records in 2008 displaying his trademark Indo Jazz sound, his second album is due out this Autumn. Musicians: vibraphone player Corey Mwamba who was nominated for the 2008 BBC Jazz Award for Innovation; Liran Donin who plays double bass and is a member of the Mercury Prize nominated band Led Bib; Cello player Jenny Adejayan who has toured with Deny Baptiste, Nitin Sawhney, Duran Duran, Razorlight, Gabrielle and Jamiroquai; Afro-Brazilian master percussionist Adriano Adewale ‘a one man orchestra’ British Theatre Guide and Shabaka Hutchings playing bass clarinet and who is part of jazz legend Courtney Pine’s Jazz Warriors. The Albany is a multi-use performing arts centre in Deptford, south-east London, comprising four performance spaces, the largest of which has a capacity of up to 500.
