Edinburgh Mela 2006

Images Video Audio
Festival season is upon us and Edinburgh’s social calendar wouldn’t be complete without the Edinburgh Mela taking place on the 2 & 3 September 2006.
Now in its 12th year, Scotland’s biggest multi-cultural festival will be returning to its home in Pilrig Park, Leith. For the second year running, the festival will be programmed and produced by Out of the Blue, the Edinburgh-based arts and education trust following the success of last year.

Performances at this year’s Mela include:

Sukshinder Shinda aka The Music Man, a singer, director and producer who has worked with the likes of Jazzy B and Legacy

Pakistani pin-ups N.R.G. Boy Band

US-based Bohemia, the world’s only Punjabi rapper

UK-based Jinx a boy band of DJ’s recent album climbing up the charts called ‘ Culture Shock’

Mentor Kollective part of Rishi Rich’s product, 2.9

The Bollywood Dancers who are the pioneers of the urban/Asian fusion dance scene and who have worked with DJ Vips, Tiger-style and Jinx

A Bollywood billboard created specifically for the Mela by Bollywood painters from Bangalore commissioned by the Scottish Society of the Arts and the Mela

Tasmin Lucia Khan will be the host for the weekend from Zee TV and Channel Five presenter

Sakhian Ladies night on Friday 1 September featuring music, dance and food for ladies only

Additional performers will be announced throughout August

Chair of the Mela board and Lord Provost Rt Hon Lesley Hinds said that the Mela festival is growing from strength-to-strength, she said: "Each year the Mela attracts both established and up and coming artists from all over the UK and the rest of the world. Edinburgh is a truly international city that is home to a great many communities and the Mela is an opportunity to celebrate that diversity."

Overseeing this year’s programme is Mrs Unis, Edinburgh Mela co-founder and Board Director, added, "We have created a programme that we think will appeal to all ages and musical tastes."

This year’s festival will include many family activities and multi-cultural performances from Eastern Europe to East India. And will also feature for the first time a visual arts programme including an arts pavillion run in conjunction with the Stills Gallery and Edinburgh Printmakers Workshop. A key focus of the festival will be a Bollywood board created by Edinburgh based artist Aeneas Wilder in collaboration with two billboard painters from Bangalore.

Dana MacLeod, Programme Director from Out of the Blue productions explains, "We are aiming to offer visitors a truly global flavour at this year’s festival and this will be reflected in the diversity of artists from Uganda to mainland China and echoed in the food stalls offering tastes from all over the world. It’s a very interactive programme with an arts pavilion offering visitors the chance to make their own art."

The Edinburgh Mela is funded by the City of Edinburgh Council, the Scottish Arts Council, and event-managed by Out of the Blue.

Due to a double booking, Rishi Rich will not be appearing at this year’s Mela festival.
