Antenatal music and lullabies from the sub-continent |

sampad south asian arts has teamed up with Walsall Primary Care Trust and Relaxed Birth & Parenting for a unique collaboration aimed at improving the antenatal experiences of mums and dads from the Black Country’s South Asian community.

Working with composers and musicians from India and the UK, sampad has produced two CD compilations of antenatal and lullaby music, entitled Mamta and Lori.
Mamta is an original CD of South Asian antenatal music which aims to help mothers and father-to-be to connect with their unborn babies, containing music in Hindi, Urdu, Brij bhasa, Punjabi, Khari boli and Rajastani Folk. By 18 weeks a baby’s ears are fully formed, so relaxing music a mother listens to whilst pregnant can benefit both her and her baby. The CD will also to be used as a relaxation tool to attract South Asian mothers-to-be to antenatal classes run by midwives, link workers and health professionals.
Lori is a selection of South Asian lullabies in Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Brij/Urdu and Gujarati for mothers, fathers, grandparents, new born babies and cultural celebrations. Lori’s aim is to help families connect with their babies, feel the benefits of touch and the warmth of family closeness. The hope is that the CDs of traditional music will compliment traditional South Asian antenatal activity, where mothers breastfeed whilst others support.
The Lori and Mamta CDs are being launched at a free Drop-In Day taking place on Wednesday 14 May at Walsall Art Gallery, 11am -3pm. The informal day for parents and tots, in celebration of Breastfeeding Awareness Week, includes lots to explore, touch, smell, hear and see in a calm soothing environment. Parents can come and spend some relaxed time with their baby in The Baby Palace, a multi sensory session for under 2s and their carers. Afterwards they take part in art activities and enjoy music from Mamta and Lori.
The Mamta and Lori CDs developed from a pilot project which sampad undertook in 2002. sampad research at Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham found that by introducing live vocalists, movement coach and massage to antenatal sessions there was a 50% increase of South Asian women attending the sessions from all cultural backgrounds, but in particular from the Muslim community, who otherwise would not be allowed or feel uncomfortable in attending the sessions.
Sharan Sandhu, sampad project manager said: Mamta and Lori are truly amazing CDs with heartfelt compositions inspired by the musicians’ personal experiences of pregnancy and parenthood. They will touch the hearts of anyone that listens to them. Our hope is to create a connection between arts and health to promote relaxation to music.
