THE ENGLAND DEBATE
Sunday 18 May 11.30am - 12.30pm
The Roundhouse, Chalk Farm

To accompany The Histories at the Roundhouse, the director of Liberty, Shami Chakrabati and writer and comedian, Hardeep Singh-Kohli, will join Artistic Director Michael Boyd on stage to discuss Shakespeare's vision of England and our concept of Englishness today, chaired by Channel 4’s Samira Ahmed.
English identity and what it means to be English in the 21st century is one of the most pertinent questions of our time. But what does Shakespeare – arguable the most famous Englishman in history – tell us about England and Englishness today?

The England Debate: Shakespeare, England & Identity is a debate running alongside The Histories, exploring the themes of identity, citizenship, ritual, religion and monarchy and how they relate to the idea of Englishness in Shakespeare’s writing.

Shami Chakrabati is the Director of Liberty, the civil liberties and human rights promotion group, and has campaigned on a wide range of subjects including the Racial and Religious Hatred Act of 2006 and the proposed ID cards. A barrister by background, Shami was recently appointed Governor of the London School of Economics and also sits on the Advisory Board of the British Institute of Human Rights and the Executive Committees of the Administrative Law Bar Association. She was made a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2007.

Hardeep Singh-Kohli is a writer, comedian, actor, presenter, director and cartographer. He has written various award-winning short films, screenplays and comedies. He is best known for writing, directing and starring in the Channel Four comedy Meet the Magoons. He is currently working as a regular presenter/contributor for both BBC TV and Radio shows, has his own column in the Scotsman on Sunday and is a guest columnist for The Guardian.

Samira Ahmed is a presenter and reporter at Channel 4 News, joining the channel after several years at the BBC. As the BBC’s Los Angeles correspondent, Samira covered the OJ Simpson case, before working as an anchor and political correspondent in Berlin for Deutsche Welle TV. As well as covering a wide range of issues for Channel 4 News, she has travelled across the world for the Channel 4 documentary series, Islam Unveiled, examining the status of Muslim women.

Michael Boyd became the Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2003 after being an Associate Director at the company for several years. Michael has directed numerous productions for the RSC including The Tempest, Henry VI trilogy & Richard III (winning an Olivier for Best Director in 2001). He was the founding Artistic Director of the Tron Theatre in Glasgow.
