Funny Black Women On the Edge!

Angie Le Mar's 1994 play Funny Black Women On the Edge returns to the UK stage in summer 2007 - Featuring: The Black Vagina Stories, Slavery - The Musical, Ah Who Dem Favour (Stars In Their Eyes) and much, much more…

The unique sketch show, which has previously broken box office records at the Edinburgh Festival and had two sell-out runs at Theatre Royal Stratford East, will return by popular demand for THREE NIGHTS ONLY at The Broadway Theatre, Lewisham from Friday 15 June to Sunday 17 June 2007.

Funny Black Women on the Edge (FBW) was originally written and directed by Angie Le Mar in 1994. The sketch show was first staged at the Aylesbury Civic Centre and opened to a sell-out audience.
On the back of its success in 1995, the show was taken to Edinburgh Festival’s Glided Balloon Theatre, which sold out from the opening night with rave reviews.

FBW was staged again in 1997, twice in 1998 and again in 2003. Every show was a sell-out success and this year's looks to be the same.

Angie says: ‘I decided to make the 2003 show my last FBW show, as I wanted to create other productions. I was aware that FBW was the only live show I was known for, and I was worried my audience would feel it was the only show I had to offer.
‘I took four years out to go away and start looking at my plans to write other plays.’

Angie reached her goal in 2006 with The Brothers, which became one of theatre’s fastest selling productions in the past decade. In the same year, she celebrated another theatre hit, Do you know where your Daughter Is, which was sold out every day over a three-week period.

‘The Brothers gave me the confidence to go away and carry on with my writing plan,’ Angie says. ‘Then the sell-out success of the Do you know where your Daughter Is gave me the confidence to bring back Funny Black Women.’

FBW 2007 looks set to be funnier and edgier than before with its amazing cast, which includes past and original members such as Angie, Yvette Rochester-Duncan, Jo Melvile and Chizzy. Eastenders star Petra Letang has also joined the cast for this spectacular comeback…

Originally directed by Angie, alongside Paulette Randall and Dawn Reid (winner of ITV Multicultural Achievement Awards), this year FBW returns in conjunction with director Glenn Dallas.

And with an endless amount of sketches to choose from, including The Lovers Rock Musical, The Black Vagina Stories, Slavery – The Musical, Ah Who Dem Favour (Stars In Their Eyes), and the hilarious American singer Falushla Falashilay (who is out of rehab but still carrying a lot of resentment for Diana Ross, and hating Iyanla Vanzant), FBW 2007 has the complete recipe for success.

‘I love this show because it’s me on form,’ Angie admits. ‘And it’s what I never see on television in this country. I also get the chance to share alongside some of the UK’s funny women and make an audience laugh at who we are; sometimes edgy, sometimes silly - even controversial - but always funny!’

With the return of FBW and a string of theatre productions in the pipeline throughout the year, Angie is set to be the leading lady in theatre for 2007.

The Best of Funny Black Women on the Edge will be staged at The Broadway Theatre, Lewisham from Friday 15 June to Sunday 17 June.
