Moving Africa 3 Monday 4 June - Saturday 16 June 2007 South Africa Umthombi Musa Hlatshwayo both choreographs and dances in Umthombi, a duet in which he plays a mentor to a young boy learning to cope with the trials and tribulations of his coming of age. Displaying beautifully controlled movement, the dance partnership explores their relationship, and sees the boy master his own body and as a result, his life. Compagnie Premier Temps Senegal Impro-Visé _2 Incorporating a haunting soundscape, Impro-Visé_2 is a skillfully constructed duet choreographed and performed by Andreya Ouamba with Fatou Cissé. In stark contrast to Umthombi, this piece takes its inspiration from the urban landscape and street children in Dakar, and won first prize in the AFAA's Danse l'Afrique Danse in Paris in 2006. Nelisiwe Xaba South Africa Plasticization Plasticization is an environmental warning bell and comments on the culture of materialism through the dancer's ingenious incorporation of everyday plastic items. In this solo performance Nelisiwe Xaba, (who has worked extensively with choreographer Robyn Orlin), uses comedy to explore topical environmental concerns and ridicule society's excessive use of plastic, from packaging to prophylactic. Compagnie Salia nï Seydou Burkina Faso C'est à dire Seydou Boro, one half of Compagnie Salia nï Seydou who performed as part of Moving Africa in bite04 and was first seen during bite01, returns to the Barbican with C'est à dire, a contemplative journey into his expressive persona. Taking charge of the stage with his powerful presence, Boro harmoniously balances dance, song and audience interaction. Through the deeply personal performance Boro reveals the influences of European and traditional African styles on his approach to choreography. C'est à dire contains some speech in French with English surtitles. |
