The awards are held to celebrate the huge impact of British Asians in both the public and private sector and will reinforce the Northern region’s reputation as a hub of the UK’s Asian economy. Estimates are that over 200,000 Asian firms exist in the UK, many of which are based in the North.
Lloyds TSB’s sponsorship of the Jewel Awards is just one aspect of the bank’s continuing involvement with the UK’s fast growing Asian population, as an employer and a financial services provider. The Group has also developed a range of products and services catering for the communities unique financial needs.
Six coveted jewel awards will be announced on the evening for Professional Excellence, Public Service Excellence, Retail Food & Franchise Excellence, Business & Commerce Excellence, Healthcare & Education Excellence, Entrepreneur Excellence and the coveted Lifetime Achievement Jewel Award. Each nomination has been profiled and vetted to form an elite shortlist. This year’s shortlist includes:
The Professional Excellence Jewel Award – Aamer Anwar, who led the Chhokar Family Justice Campaign which led to the revolutionary change in Scotland’s Prosecution Service; high profile chartered accountant Saeid Mokhtassi; and financial adviser Preetesh Panchmatia specialising in wealth creation for professionals in the medical and dental fields.
The Entrepreneur Excellence Jewel Award – former in-house solicitor at Hammond Suddards Edge solicitors Asif Din of his practice Dean Solicitors; Moneeb Awan of the award winning software company eSAY; and Ashok Kallumpram of successful textiles company Premier.
The Healthcare & Education Excellence Jewel Award – international Senior Lecturer and programme leader for Business with Marketing at Newcastle Business School Hina Khan; award winning Chairman of Stockport NHS Trust Dr Robina Shah; and Cabinet Office Advisory panel on Futurebuilders Mohammed Amran, also the youngest ever commissioner for The Commission for Racial Equality.
The Business & Commerce Excellence Jewel Award – textile manufactures extraordinaire and multi-millionaire brothers Jasvinder and Manmohan Singh of Maharaja Textiles; Shaf Rasul of E-net Computers, the largest storage media distributor in Europe; and Anjum Ahmed of Nik Nak Clothing, 2004’s 14th fastest growing company in the UK by Delloite’s INDY 100.
Retail Food & Franchise Excellence Jewel Award – Zuber Issa of the Virgin Fast Track 100 Company Eurogarages; entrepreneur and celebrity chef Tommy Miah of original Raj Hotel Group; and award winning restaurateur Athair Khan of The Last Days of the Raj.
The Public Service Excellence Jewel Award – Nadeem Ahmad of North East Strategic Partnership for Asylum & Refugee Support who also established the first multi-racial youth club in Newcastle; Sergeant Nota Jhanji-Garrod who has been a serving GMP officer for 20 years, being the first Asian police woman to join the forces in 1986; and Narendra Bajaria Board Member of Yorkshire Culture.
The Lloyds TSB Northern Jewel Awards are one of three glittering award ceremonies celebrating and congratulating the achievements of the movers and shakers of UK Asian enterprise, with additional events comprising Lloyds TSB Central Jewel Awards on 14th July 2007 at NEC Hilton, Birmingham and Lloyds TSB Southern Jewel Awards on 15th September 2007 at Hilton Park Lane, London.
