Forum welcomes health and safety initiative

An initiative to help vulnerable workers with access to bilingual health and safety advice will help new migrant communities according to minority ethnic business leaders in the West Midlands.

Mohammad Nazir, chair of the West Midlands Minority Ethnic Business Forum, has welcomed a vulnerable workers initiative being launched by the Health and Safety Executive.

A free help line is available on 0845 345 0055 with the facility to answer calls in more than 100 different languages.

“Minority ethnic workers and in particular those from the new migrant and emerging communities are particularly vulnerable,” said Mohammad Nazir.

“Providing a safe working environment is a benefit for workers and employers. Migrant workers often do not understand proper health and safety standards and find it difficult to challenge employers when they think something is wrong.

“Workers can be exploited such as being told that they have to provide safety equipment and clothing whereas this is the responsibility of the employer.”

The vulnerable workers project is being launched initially in the West Midlands conurbation but may be extended throughout the whole of the Midlands area.
