Chinese Community Responds

THE Chinese community in Birmingham is responding to increasing interest in the country.

“Friends of the Chinese Community Centre” has been set up and will launch with a cultural evening next Saturday (February 16).

The initiative has been taken by the Chinese Community Centre in Digbeth, that began 31 years ago with three volunteers and now employs a staff of 10, providing services including advice on issue ranging from training to welfare and mental health.

“Alongside the rapid economic and social development of China and recognising the increased interest in Chinese culture and business opportunities we are expanding our vision,” said Dr Yeow Poon, chair of the Chinese Community Centre and recently appointed to the Board of the West Midlands Minority Ethnic Business Forum.

“We want to cross the cultural gaps with other communities in Birmingham and contribute towards the development of cultural, social and economic bridges with China.”

The Friends will launch with a Chinese New Year celebration including speakers for the Chinese Embassy and Birmingham City Council.
